Why Eating Carbs Is Essential To Sustainable Weight Loss

Have you heard all the info out there?

To lose weight…eat your carbs before noon… don’t eat carbs at all…eat carbs just not gluten...

Ummm I don’t know about you but all this conflicting info is enough to just say eff it – and keep digging in the bread basket!

Before you do, hear me out:

Eating healthy carbs is essential to weight loss for most women. In my opinion, cutting all carbs is actually dangerous and will not help you lose weight in a sustainable way.

Here is what you must know about carbs and weight loss:

1. The quality of the carbs you choose matters!

If you want to lose weight, you have to ditch the processed and the refined carbs. That means, the refined breads, the pastries, the muffins, the cookies, the wheat pasta, etc. There are no nutrients in there and they are just empty calories that are keeping you inflamed and fat.

Instead, you want to eat plenty of vegetables and a moderate amount of starchy vegetables, fruits and whole gluten-free grains like rice, quinoa and buckwheat for example.

Yes, fruits and vegetables are considered carbs. When they are broken down in the body during digestion, they are glucose molecules. This means they are sugar molecules.

What do I mean by starchy vegetables? I mean veggies like beets, carrots, sweet potatoes and winter squashes like spaghetti squash, butternut squash and acorn squash for example.

2. Skip starchy carbs at breakfast

For breakfast, you want to concentrate on having a high protein breakfast with some healthy fat and fiber. Skip the starchy carbs to keep your energy high and to avoid mid-morning and afternoon cravings.

3. Have your starchy carbs when it counts the most – dinner

This may go against everything that you’ve heard but this is key!

Studies show that eating starchy carbs about 4-5 hours before you go to sleep:

  1. Normalizes your cortisol. You want to keep this stress hormone under control or you will keep packing on the pounds around your stomach.
  2. Improves your sleep for better appetite control and increased metabolism.
  3. Helps you lose excess weight by making you a better fat burner.

I recommend having ¼ cup to ½ cup of starchy veggies or gluten-free whole grains on your plate along with your non-starchy vegetables, your protein and your fat at dinner.

Just make sure you don’t eat starchy carbs 3 hours prior to the time you go to sleep or you will gain weight.

Try this strategic way to eat carbs to lose weight naturally and to feel amazing!
